Serving Seniors at HealthEase Fair

For many seniors, it is often difficult to obtain necessary attention for specific health needs.  It may be due to physical or societal barriers, or because the importance of delivering the proper support may be overshadowed by other matters.  Understanding this, the “yellow-shirt” volunteers of the Church of God wholeheartedly devote time and effort to deliver much needed assistance to seniors in the community.  This is especially so considering the importance of filial piety and the respect of elders who have worked so hard to build society as it is today. Though they may have little time to address their own needs, the Church of God members strive to bring them joy and peace following the teachings of Christ.

On October 3, 2013, more than 30 “yellow-shirt” volunteers gathered for the HealthEASE Senior Wellness Fair in Garfield, NJ. Throughout the fair, the volunteers were hard at work, aiding seniors and serving as facilitators for staff and vendors at the event. They also assembled cheer squads to deliver a warm welcome to the more than 200 seniors who were in attendance for the fair. From start to finish, volunteers were an unceasing body of excitement and support, making every effort to accommodate guests as they explored various services and received necessary attention for their health needs.

The fair featured health screenings for blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, foot, hearing, and vision, as well as acupressure and aromatherapy.  All the while, the “yellow-shirt” volunteers offered support by servicing key areas across the venue including registration, front entryway’s, primary booths and wherever there was need.  Additionally, church members served by guiding seniors through the parking lot, walking them to the front doors, serving lunch, cleaning bathrooms, and even cheering them on. Seniors and staff were filled with thanks and gracious emotions for the support of the volunteers.

“It took me two and a half hours to do this! Now it’s taking fifteen minutes,” said a staffer at the senior center, overwhelmed with the unity and support of the members who stayed even after the health fair had concluded to lend a hand. “This is unbelievable!”

The Church of God aims to continue its initiatives in delivering service and support to the senior community. With the desire to bring joy and hope to the hearts of mankind, the “yellow-shirt” volunteers of the Church of God will continue to providing service and support to the world.
