On April 26, members of the World Mission Society Church of God reported to Spring Creek in Jamaica Bay to participate in the Worldwide Environmental Cleanup Campaign.
The church members came from locations in New York and New Jersey to support the American Littoral Society (ALS) in the restoration and protection of the coastal regions. The volunteers worked hard to remove debris and garbage that had accumulated throughout the year.
The relationship between ALS and the Church of God is seven years strong and continues to flourish. ALS Chapter Director, Don Riepe, has been cleaning up the coast since 1986. However the dedicated conservationist also expressed a deep appreciation for this particular group.
When asked why he keeps inviting the World Mission Society Church of God back to the bay, he commended their work by saying, “The Church of God does the best work and removes big ticket items that nobody else will. They’re moving hundreds of pounds, they’re youthful and excited and nobody else does this.”
His words proved true as large tires, marine debris, rotting lumber and even a dislodged 20-foot long portion of a dock were removed from the shoreline. Most people would become exhausted after such rigorous work, but the Church of God volunteers kept their energy and excitement up even after the last of the nearly 100 trash bags were loaded into the truck. Some of the members even carried large pieces of lumber and bags of debris to the disposal site, all with smiles on their faces as if their source of strength was infinite.
Holding a banner high and gathering for a group photo, the members took a moment to listen to words of gratitude from Riepe and his staff who expressed their appreciation by saying, “Thank you, Heavenly Mother, for providing us with these energetic and amazing young people to help us get our mission accomplished!”
